The Deccan and Goa
HYDERABAD - hampi - BADAMI - AGONDA

ABOUT
Cross the Deccan from the historic streets of Hyderabad to Hampi’s extraordinary boulder-strewn ruins, before continuing through the early temple landscapes of northern Karnataka and ending on Goa’s quieter southern coast. Along the way, the journey brings together Islamic architecture, ancient kingdoms, living craft traditions and regional food, with time to explore on foot and meet the people behind the places. The final days in Agonda offer a gentler rhythm beside the Arabian Sea.
Why we love this trip
This journey brings together very different sides of the Deccan without feeling rushed. Hyderabad introduces the region through its Islamic architecture, old-city neighbourhoods and food traditions, while Hampi opens out into a completely different world oftemple complexes, archaeological sites, granite boulders and the Tungabhadra River.
There is depth here beyond the headline sights. Spend time with local cooks and craftspeople, explore Anegundi with the Kishkinda Trust, and see how traditional skills continue to support livelihoods today. In Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami, the story shifts again to some of India’s earliest and most important temple architecture, set among villages and red sandstone landscapes.
The route works particularly well overland, giving a real sense of travelling across the Deccan rather than simply hopping between destinations.
Then, after several days of history and exploration, South Goa offers a complete change of pace: Portuguese influences, local food and a few quiet days beside the Arabian Sea.

Day 1 - 3 - Hyderabad
ACTIVITY
Hyderabad is a city shaped by sultans, Nizams, traders and cooks, where grand Islamic architecture sits alongside crowded bazaars and neighbourhoods built around food and family life. Explore the lanes around the Charminar, the palaces and tombs of the old rulers, and the beautifully restored Bansilalpet Stepwell. Food is part of the city’s identity, from fragrant biryanis to Irani cafés and old family recipes, making Hyderabad a particularly good place to begin this journey.
Getting there: Fly into Hyderabad (9hrs) and transfer privately to your hotel, around 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.
Experiences: Old City food walk · Bansilalpet Stepwell · Cook Hyderabad — prepare biryani and share a meal with a local family.
Day 4 - 6 - Hampi
ACTIVITY
Hampi is one of India’s most extraordinary historic landscapes, where the remains of the Vijayanagara Empire lie scattered among huge granite boulders, banana plantations and the banks of the Tungabhadra River. Temples, gateways and ruined palaces appear across a vast area, making this somewhere to explore slowly and on foot. Across the river, Anegundi offers a different perspective, with village life, traditional crafts and community-led conservation adding another layer to Hampi’s story.
Getting there: Allowing a full day for the overland journey to Hampi, we will break the drive at Alampur to explore its early Chalukyan temples. For those who would prefer a shorter transfer, flights to Vidyanagar Airport, near Hampi, can be arranged.
Experiences: Living Anegundi — visit the Kishkinda Trust and women-led banana-fibre craft initiatives · Tungabhadra trek through the boulder landscape and ruins · Traditional coracle crossing on the river.

Day 7 - 8 - Aihole, Pattadakal & Badami
ACTIVITY
The sandstone temples and rock-cut caves of northern Karnataka reveal some of the most important early developments in Indian temple architecture. From Aihole’s remarkable collection of experimental shrines to the beautifully proportioned temples of Pattadakal and Badami’s caves carved into red sandstone cliffs, each site has its own character. Exploring them with an expert guide brings the carvings, religious traditions and changing architectural styles to life, while the surrounding villages keep the experience firmly rooted in the present.
Getting there: Transfer to Hosapete station and travel by First AC train to Badami, approximately 13:40–16:13, followed by a private transfer to Aihole.
Experiences: Chalukyan Country — expert-led exploration of Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami · Time to explore the temples and village surroundings on foot.
Day 9 - 12 - Agonda, South Goa
ACTIVITY
After the temples, forts and historic cities of the Deccan, the journey ends at a gentler pace on the beaches of South Goa. Agonda is quieter than the better-known resorts further north, with a long sweep of sand, small cafés and a relaxed village atmosphere. There is still plenty to explore, from Portuguese-influenced architecture and local food to Goa’s rural traditions, but there is also time to do very little at all.
Getting there: Travel by private car from Badami to South Goa, allowing around 5–6 hours depending on traffic and stops.
Experiences: Goan Stories — Goa Chitra, Portuguese-Goan heritage and local food · Free time to enjoy Agonda and the surrounding coast.
Getting home: On Day 13 travel by private transfer to Goa Dabolim Airport, around 1½ hours for your onward flight.
