India's Wild Heart

BHOPAL — SATPURA — KANHA — BANDHAVGARH — JABALPUR

long pattern.png

ABOUT

A journey through the forests and grasslands of Madhya Pradesh, balancing serious wildlife encounters with culture, food and strong naturalist guiding. Begin beside Bhopal’s lakes, explore Satpura on foot and by water, then travel through Kanha and Bandhavgarh before finishing beside the Narmada in Jabalpur.

Why we love this trip

What makes this journey work is the way it moves from culture into wilderness, then deeper still. Bhopal provides the opening contrast: lakes, markets, architecture and the stories of the Begums, before the route leaves the city and enters Central India’s forest landscapes.

Satpura changes the pace completely. Here, the wild can be explored on foot, by canoe and by jeep, giving the experience far more variety than a standard safari circuit. Kanha follows with broad meadows, sal forest and the conservation story of the hard-ground barasingha, while Bandhavgarh brings a more dramatic final chapter, with rocky hills, dense woodland and excellent tiger habitat.

We chose this route because each place contributes something different. The landscapes change, the safari style changes and the lodges feel rooted in their settings. It will suit travellers who want strong wildlife experiences without spending every day repeating the same routine, and who value good guiding, thoughtful pacing and time to enjoy the forest as much as the sightings themselves. Bhopal ensures the journey begins with people, history and food, not simply another park gate.

DAYS 1–2 — BHOPAL

ACTIVITY

Begin in Bhopal, a green city built around lakes and shaped by a remarkable line of female rulers. Explore the old city, its markets and distinctive food, then visit the Tribal Museum for a vivid introduction to the communities of Madhya Pradesh. Depending on timing, add the prehistoric rock shelters at Bhimbetka or the Buddhist monuments of Sanchi.

Highlight: Discovering the stories of Bhopal’s Begums before travelling into the forests of Madhya Pradesh.

WHERE TO STAY

This is simply our starting idea; every journey can be adjusted around you. Jehan Numa Retreat sits on Bhopal’s greener edge beside Van Vihar. Its cottages open onto mature gardens, while the pool, spa and produce-led restaurants make it an easy place to settle after the flight.

DAYS 3–5 — SATPURA

ACTIVITY

Travel south into Satpura, where forested hills meet the Denwa backwaters. Explore by jeep, boat or canoe, and enter the forest on foot with an expert naturalist. Night drives in the buffer reveal another side of the reserve. The variety of activities makes Satpura feel immersive rather than built around repeated game drives.

Highlight: Crossing the water at dawn before entering the forest on foot with a naturalist.

WHERE TO STAY

Reni Pani Jungle Lodge is set within its own forested estate, with cottages and safari tents spaced among the trees. We value its experienced naturalists and unusually broad programme, from walking and canoeing to cycling, camping and jeep safaris. There is also a secluded jungle pool for quieter afternoons.

DAYS 6–8 — KANHA

ACTIVITY

Continue to Kanha, where sal forest opens into broad grasslands known for tiger, wild dog, gaur and the rare hard-ground barasingha. Safari drives are balanced with birding, riverbed walks, cycling and village experiences. Kanha is beautiful at every scale, from the movement of a predator to the detail of tracks in the dust.

Highlight: Watching barasingha move through Kanha’s open meadows in the soft morning light.

WHERE TO STAY

Outpost 12 is a small, naturalist-owned bio-lodge created around a forest-first idea. Its design draws on Kanha’s grasslands and indigenous traditions, while guided activities extend beyond the park gates. We particularly like its slower approach: fewer distractions, strong interpretation and time to notice the smaller stories of the forest.

DAYS 9–11 — BANDHAVGARH

ACTIVITY

The journey reaches its most tiger-focused chapter in Bandhavgarh. Morning and afternoon drives explore a compact landscape of forest, meadow and rocky hills, following tracks and alarm calls with experienced naturalists. Between safaris, slow down at the lodge, join a bird walk or explore the buffer after dark on a night drive.

Highlight: Following fresh tracks through the forest before a tiger steps into an open meadow.

WHERE TO STAY

Samode Safari Lodge sits within 35 acres of forest near Bandhavgarh. Spacious villas, an infinity pool and a spa make the final safari stay feel generous without losing its connection to the landscape. Its naturalists combine technical knowledge with warmth, creating wildlife experiences that feel informed rather than overly formal.

DAY 12 — JABALPUR

ACTIVITY

Leave Bandhavgarh for Jabalpur and a deliberately unhurried final night before flying home. Where timings allow, visit Bhedaghat, where the Narmada cuts through pale marble cliffs, or watch the evening rituals beside the river. This practical stop earns its place by ending the journey calmly rather than with a chain of tight connections.

Highlight: Seeing the Narmada flow between the pale marble cliffs at Bhedaghat.

WHERE TO STAY

Narmada Jacksons is our more characterful suggestion for the final night, an established Jabalpur hotel with heritage styling, a pool and several places to eat.
