CHENNAI — PONDICHERRY — KAVERI DELTA — CHETTINAD — MADURAI — VARKALA

ABOUT
Travel through Tamil Nadu from Chennai’s neighbourhoods and the Coromandel Coast to villages, Chettinad mansions and Madurai’s temple streets. Private houses, regional food, living rituals and hands-on craft encounters shape the journey, before a train south leads to three relaxed nights beside the Arabian Sea.
Why we love this trip
Tamil Nadu rewards curiosity. Its temples are extraordinary, but the real character of this journey lies in what surrounds them: flower markets, family kitchens, village streets, hand-painted tiles and houses shaped by generations of trade and travel.
We begin in Chennai, where old Madras, classical culture and everyday city life provide a grounded introduction. The coastal road south brings the stone monuments of Mahabalipuram before Pondicherry shifts the mood with shaded streets, Tamil quarters and French architecture.
From there, the journey becomes more intimate. Mangala Heritage places you inside a small village in the Kaveri Delta, close to Chola temples and working craftspeople. Chettinad follows with grand mansions, bold food and quiet rural roads, before Madurai brings everything together in a city where worship, trade and daily life still move around the Meenakshi Temple.
The rhythm completely. After the intensity of Tamil Nadu, three nights beside the sea provide space for yoga, coastal walks, cafés and time to do very little. It is a cultural journey with a genuinely relaxed ending.

DAYS 1–2 — CHENNAI
CITY RHYTHMS
Begin in Chennai with a privately guided walk through Mylapore, where temple rituals, flower sellers and neighbourhood cafés reveal the city at street level. Explore Kapaleeshwarar Temple, taste a traditional South Indian breakfast and discover Chennai’s classical music, dance or contemporary design scene, depending on what is happening during your stay.
Highlight: Seeing Mylapore come to life as flowers, food and worship fill the streets around the temple.
WHERE TO STAY
This is simply our starting idea; every journey can be adjusted around you. Hanu Reddy Residences at Poes Garden occupies leafy 1960s bungalows, offering a calm, family-run base with gardens and home-style food in the heart of Chennai.
DAYS 3–5 — PONDICHERRY
COASTAL STORIES
Travel south along the Coromandel Coast, stopping at Mahabalipuram’s rock-cut monuments and Shore Temple before continuing to Pondicherry. Explore the French and Tamil quarters on foot, visit the market and meet local makers. A thoughtfully planned visit to Auroville can focus on its farms, forests, architecture and experimental community life.
Highlight: Arriving at the Shore Temple as its weathered stone rises beside the Bay of Bengal.
WHERE TO STAY
Maison Twenty-Six is a restored garden house hidden behind discreet doors in Pondicherry’s French Quarter. Its small scale, elegant rooms and leafy courtyard create the feeling of a private home, within easy walking distance of the promenade, shops and restaurants.

DAYS 6–7 — KAVERI DELTA
VILLAGE TAMIL NADU
Continue into the Kaveri Delta, where temple towns give way to smaller villages, rice fields and workshops. Visit one or two Chola temples with a specialist guide, meet bronze casters or temple-chariot makers and walk through Tirupugalur. The focus is depth: fewer sites, better interpretation and time to understand the landscape around them.
Highlight: Meeting craftspeople whose work still supports the temples and communities of the Kaveri Delta.
WHERE TO STAY
Mangala Heritage is a restored Tamil Brahmin house in Tirupugalur, surrounded by village life rather than tourist infrastructure. Home-style meals, local hosts and access to nearby temples, craftspeople and music make the stay one of the journey’s most personal chapters.
DAYS 8–10 — CHETTINAD
MANSIONS AND MAKERS
Move south into Chettinad, a region of grand mansions, patterned tiles and distinctive cooking. Explore Kanadukathan by bicycle or on foot, visit an Athangudi tile workshop and meet handloom weavers. A cooking session brings the region’s spice-rich food into focus, with enough time left to enjoy the house and its gardens.
Highlight: Cycling between Chettinad’s vast mansions as village life unfolds along the quiet roads.
WHERE TO STAY
Visalam is a carefully restored Chettiar mansion that feels rooted in the village around it. High-ceilinged rooms, shaded gardens and a pool provide space to slow down, while local guides connect guests with architecture, food, crafts and everyday Chettinad life.

DAYS 11–12 — MADURAI
TEMPLE CITY
Finish the Tamil Nadu section in Madurai, where the old city revolves around the Meenakshi Temple and its daily rituals. Explore with a specialist guide, walk through flower and produce markets and sample the city’s distinctive food. An evening visit reveals the streets, shrines and processions at their most atmospheric and intensely alive.
Highlight: Returning to the Meenakshi Temple in the evening as lamps, music and processions animate its halls.
WHERE TO STAY
Heritage Madurai offers a calm counterpoint to the city, set within gardens around buildings associated with architect Geoffrey Bawa. The pool, mature trees and spacious rooms make it an appealing base after the colour and intensity of central Madurai.
DAYS 13–15 — VARKALA
COASTAL PAUSE
Travel south by reserved air-conditioned train to Varkala, with private transfers and luggage assistance at both ends. The final three nights are deliberately unstructured: walk along the cliffs, join a yoga class, swim, explore local cafés or simply slow down. After Tamil Nadu’s temples and cities, the change of pace feels earned.
Highlight: Watching the sun drop into the Arabian Sea from Varkala’s quieter South Cliff.
WHERE TO STAY
Villa Jacaranda is a tiny, design-led guesthouse on South Cliff, away from Varkala’s busiest stretch. With only a handful of rooms, a pool and easy access to the beach, it provides a peaceful and personal ending to the journey.
