Some hotels are simply somewhere to sleep. Others become part of the journey itself, helping you connect with a place through its people, food, traditions and natural surroundings.

CGH Earth is a collection of hotels that has long embraced this philosophy. With roots in Kerala and a growing presence across India, the group is known for creating distinctive stays that reflect the character of their destinations while placing environmental responsibility and local communities at the heart of their approach.

I've had the pleasure of staying at three of their properties in Kerala: Coconut Lagoon, Marari Beach and Spice Village and have long admired their commitment to responsible tourism, locally sourced food and warm hospitality.

Three very different experiences in Kerala

Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom

Set beside Vembanad Lake, Coconut Lagoon celebrates the landscapes and traditions of Kerala's backwaters. Arriving by boat, we were welcomed with a coconut water to enjoy in the airy reception hall. It is an incredibly peaceful setting among coconut palms and waterways.

The property incorporates traditional Kerala architecture, while its conservation initiatives include helping protect the rare indigenous Vechur cattle breed. Birdwatching and encounters with backwater life are part of the experience. Within ten minutes of arriving we saw an otter, a monitor lizard and a hawk perched on a sign, as we strolled the grounds.

Marari Beach, Mararikulam

On Kerala's Arabian Sea coast, Marari Beach takes inspiration from the simplicity of local fishing villages. Its cottages sit within spacious tropical grounds, where an organic kitchen garden supplies fresh produce and introduces guests to the ingredients of regional cooking.

It's a place that lends itself to slowing down, spending time outdoors and enjoying the natural rhythms of the coast.

Spice Village, Thekkady

Close to Periyar Tiger Reserve, Spice Village draws inspiration from the architecture and traditional practices of the region's indigenous Mannan community. Cottages are roofed with elephant grass using traditional thatching skills, while naturalist-led experiences encourage guests to discover the surrounding environment. The property has also invested in solar energy and other measures to reduce its environmental impact.

Responsible travel in practice

What appeals to me about CGH Earth is that responsible tourism is not simply presented as an optional extra. The group's approach includes supporting local livelihoods, protecting natural resources, celebrating regional food traditions and finding ways to reduce the environmental impact of hospitality.

Many properties incorporate locally grown ingredients into their menus, work with nearby farmers and artisans, and create opportunities for guests to learn more about the communities around them. These are the details that can make a stay more rewarding, both for the traveller and for the destination.

Beyond Kerala

Although Kerala remains central to the group's identity, CGH Earth now offers experiences across several other Indian regions. These include heritage accommodation in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, nature-focused retreats, and distinctive stays in destinations as varied as Goa, the Andaman Islands and the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal.

The group also has a dedicated collection of Ayurveda and wellbeing properties, including SwaSwara in Karnataka, where rest, movement and mindful living form an important part of the experience.

Why we recommend CGH Earth

At Peacock & Banyan, we believe that where you stay can shape how you experience a destination.

We look for properties with a strong sense of place, thoughtful hospitality and a genuine commitment to the people and environments around them.

CGH Earth offers some wonderful examples of this approach, combining comfort and character with opportunities to experience India beyond the familiar tourist trail.
