Travel across Western Rajasthan from Jaisalmer’s desert citadel to the blue lanes of Jodhpur, the rural landscapes of Deogarh and Udaipur’s lakes. Forts and palaces set the scene, but local food, crafts, train journeys and smaller family-run stays bring the region’s living culture into focus.
Why we love this trip
This journey follows a route through four very different parts of Rajasthan. It begins in Jaisalmer, where the fort rises from the desert and daily life still unfolds within its walls. From there, the road leads to Jodhpur’s blue neighbourhoods, markets and formidable hilltop fort.
Deogarh changes the pace. Three nights create time for rural Rajasthan: village roads, artisans, birdlife and the wonderfully unhurried metre-gauge train. This quieter middle section reveals a landscape shaped by farming, family histories and small communities.
Udaipur provides a beautiful finale. Its lakes, gardens and old-city lanes feel markedly different from the desert where the journey began, while the city’s workshops and food traditions keep the experience connected to present-day Rajasthan.
We chose this route for travellers who want to see the state’s celebrated architecture without rushing between landmarks. The distances are meaningful, the scenery changes steadily, and each hotel has character to feel part of the journey rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
DAYS 1–3 — JAISALMER
DESERT STORIES
Begin in Rajasthan’s far west, where Jaisalmer Fort rises above a maze of carved havelis, temples and narrow streets. Explore the living fort and old city with a private guide, walk beside Gadisar Lake and travel beyond town for a quieter desert experience, timed for the softer light of late afternoon.
Highlight: Watching Jaisalmer’s sandstone walls change from gold to amber as the sun drops across the desert.
WHERE TO STAY
This is simply our starting idea; every journey can be adjusted around you. The Gulaal combines haveli-inspired architecture with a pool and rooftop restaurant overlooking Jaisalmer Fort, creating a calm base just beyond the old city.
DAYS 4–5 — JODHPUR
THE BLUE CITY
Continue to Jodhpur for Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada and the tangled lanes beneath the fortress walls. Walk through the old city and market with a local guide, then explore Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, where restored native plants and walking trails reveal another side of this famously vivid city.
Highlight: Looking across Jodhpur’s blue rooftops from the ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort.
WHERE TO STAY
Daspan House brings a more contemporary mood to the journey, pairing Jodhpur’s red-sandstone character with gardens, a pool and thoughtful interiors. Its guided experiences connect the fort, old city, market and Rao Jodha Park.
DAYS 6–8 — DEOGARH
RURAL RAJASTHAN
The landscape quietens around Deogarh. Ride the local metre-gauge train through hills and villages, explore the countryside on foot or by vehicle and meet craftspeople working within nearby communities. With three nights, there is room for birding, shared meals and unscheduled time, rather than treating rural Rajasthan as a brief stopover.
Highlight: Travelling by slow local train as village platforms, grazing animals and rocky hills pass the open windows.
WHERE TO STAY
Dev Shree Deogarh is the family’s intimate home beneath Deogarh Fort, surrounded by lakes and countryside. Personal hosting, elegant courtyards and regional cooking make the stay feel connected to the place rather than staged around its history.
DAYS 9–11 — UDAIPUR
LAKES AND MAKERS
Finish beside Udaipur’s lakes, exploring the City Palace, old-city lanes and waterfront with a private guide. Take to Lake Pichola by boat, meet local makers and leave time for the gardens, cafés and quieter corners beyond the major sights. The atmosphere offers a graceful contrast to Jaisalmer’s desert opening.
Highlight: Crossing Lake Pichola as the City Palace and surrounding hills are reflected in the evening water.
WHERE TO STAY
PremKunj is a small boutique homestay set among trees near Badi Lake, beyond the busiest streets. Individually designed rooms, a pool and peaceful gardens offer space to slow down while remaining within reach of central Udaipur.
